Falascha, Äthiopien, ca. 4. Jahrh., 7.5 cm.

Falasha, Ethiopia, ca. 4th century A.D. 7,5 cm The Falasha, the "black Jews", are a small ethnic group in Ethiopia which practises a pre-Talmudic Jewish faith (the Mishna and Talmud are unknown to them); their name probably comes from the Ethiopian verb fåläsä, meaning to emigrate. The majority of them, who lived west, north and east of Lake Tana, were flown out to Israel after the civil war. The Falasha are not likely to be ethnic Jews, but a segment of the early Agau population converted to Judaism by Yemenite Jews.
