Männliche Zwillingsfigur "ibedji"
Yoruba, Nigeria.Mit blau gefärbter Turmfrisur. H. 26,5 cm.
A male twin figure "ibedji"
Yoruba, Nigeria, H. 26,5 cm With blue dyed towering coiffure It is in no way a specialty of the Yoruba, although twins have an important place in their ideological system, not least because twin births also happen four times as often as in the USA or in England for example. If one of the two or both twins die, ibedji have to be carved. They are dressed, anointed, fed and cared for by their mother, if mischief is to be averted. They are usually placed on the family altar or in the bedroom of the mother. Although Christianity and Islam have contributed to the decline of this custom, many converts seek an escape in synchretism.
