(20.9 x 36.2 cm) Footnotes: This painting is from a dispersed manuscript of Nusrati's Gulshan-I 'Ishg ('The Rose Garden of Love') that focuses on the complicated tale of several pairs of lovers. Starting with King Bikram and his wife, who cannot conceive until Bikram completes a journey of self-discovery, it continues with the adventures of their son, Prince Manohar, who, with another prince, rescues two kidnapped princesses. Although it is generally agreed that the series comes from the area of Golconda, scholars have been misled by the disparate dates on the verso inscriptions to assign dates from 1686 until about 1720. Bidar has been mentioned as a possible provenance by Zebrowski, in view of the series apparently being related to the Ragamala pages in the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City thought to be from there (Zebrowski, Deccani Painting, 1983, figs. 199-202) and the former Stuart Cary Welch collection (ibid., fig. 203).
