A Pair Of 22-Bore Flintlock Holster Pistols By G. Trulock Of London, Late 17th Century With three-stage barrels each slightly flared towards the muzzle, breeches each signed in capitals on a shaped panel with chiselled foliate finial, border engraved tangs each finely engraved with a foliate scroll, border engraved rounded locks (one lightly pitted, top of one cock replaced) each signed in capitals, highly figured moulded full stocks (one fore-end replaced at the the muzzle, the other stock replaced) with shaped apron around the barrel tang, steel mounts comprising side-plates each pierced and chiselled with a foliated monster issuing scrolling foliage from its mouth, shaped vacant escutcheons each chiselled with foliage, border engraved spurred pommels each with stepped circular cap, border engraved trigger-guards each with chiselled foliate finial, turned baluster ramrod-pipes (one forward one replaced), and later ramrods, one with horn tip and steel worm (some old light pitting), London proof marks and indistinct barrelsmith's mark, probably of George Trulock (2) 30 cm. barrels Footnotes: Provenance The Penrose Collection George 1 Trulock was apprenticed to Harward Darke and turned over to his father William 1 (mentioned in Pepys' Diary 29 March 1667 'One Trulocke the famous gunsmith, that is a mighty ingenious man and he did take my gun in pieces and made me understand the secrets thereof') in 1680. He was allowed to prove guns under his father's mark in 1687 and was free of the Gunmakers' Company the following year.
