(17 2/5 x 14 1/3 x 4/5 in.) Footnotes: Provenance At some point at Doll & Richards, Inc., Boston; bought by present owner at Eastman Antiques, Cape Neddick, ME, in July 1995. Collection of Jonathan Friedman. N.B. The engraving's inscription reads: 'DOMINUS IOANNES VANDEN WOVWER / Eq. Topparcha Quenastæ Regi Catholico Belli, et / Supremi Ærarii in Belgio a Consiliis'. Below, 'Anton. van Dÿck pinxit' and 'Paul Pontius sculpsit.' In the top right, within the image, is inscribed 'Ætatis suæ LVIII. / Ao M.DC. XXXIL.' This portrait is based on the painting by Anthony van Dyck of Jan van den Wouver (Joannes Woverius) (Antwerp 1574-1638), who was a diplomat and advisor to Archdukes Albrecht and Isabelle in Brussels. He was a good friend of Peter Paul Rubens and is depicted in Rubens's The Four Philosophers (1611-12).
