Roman 1st half of 3rd cent. A.D..
Marble. L. 208 cm. D. 61 cm. H. 39.2-41.2 cm
A rectangular panel depicting the three graces adorns the centre of the front of this magnificent sarcophagus. The figures are child-like, with rounded proportions. The central figure stands out because she is shown from behind, wearing an elegantly draped mantle around her waist. She extends her arms to embrace her two companions who face full front. A vessel stands on the ground on the left. In the corners, a naked, winged genius in the shape of a child, carrying a torch. Between the figural decoration two profiled panels with a strigilis pattern. The narrow sides are adorned with a bird-griffin and a lion griffin respectively, both striding towards the front of the sarcophagus. In the interior, the section for the head is offset and marked by incisions. Condition: Reverse with an ancient (?) drainage hole. Minor lacunae at three of the top corners. Cracks filled in. A total of five iron brackets, probably for stabilisation. On the reverse a small lacuna at the top rim is filled in with grey stone; a small hole in the base is likewise filled. Edges slightly worn.
Formerly Coll. Dr. Gordon Scott (b. 1905); possibly acquired from Roger Warner in the 1950s. Thence by descent. Once probably Beckfort, a substantial country house near Brampton and Ullswater in the Lake District, removed to a property in Northumberland in 1969. Later, N. Barrett, Esq., whose wife was a member of the Common Shipping Family based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Subsequently acquired by the previous owners as a garden ornament when they purchased their property from the Barrett family in the 1980's. Bears a copper plaque inscribed "Brought from Rome 1902".
