A FRENCH LIGHT CAVALRY OFFICER’S SABER M1822, MODIFIED 1899. FRANCE, CHATTELERAULT, 1916.
Sabre d’officier de Artillerie cavalerie legere, modèle 1822/89.
Origin: France, 1916.
Blade: steel slightly bent single edged blade a la Montmorency, with one wide fuller and one narrow next to the edge. The wide fuller ending with curve at the ricasso. Engraved inscription on the edge of the blade: Manufacture nationale d’Armes de Chatellerault Janvier 1916 – Off[ic]er – d’Art[il]erie – M[ode]le -1822-99 E. Two control stamps on ricasso, covered by the leather spacer.
Closed brass half-basket hilt, three branches from yelman to the pommel, short backstrap, grip of blackened buffalo horn with twisted brass wire. Brass parts of the hilt with botanical décor.
Scabbard with single band and ring for carrying the sword on the saddle, after 1882.
Total length in scabbard – 109,7 cm, without – 105,3 cm; length of the blade – 90 cm; width – 29 mm; thickness – 9 mm.
