GOOD QUALITY RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON IN BRASS KIOT, MOTHER-OF-GOD “JOY TO ALL WHO SORROW”. RUSSIA, 19TH CENTURY.
Origin: Russia, 19th century.
Dimensions: 31 x 25,5 cm.
Russian icon, tempera, gold leaf, levkas (gesso) on wooden panel. Dated to ca. 1840-1880. With brass oklad.
In Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Christianity, the Joy of All Who Sorrow is a title given to the Theotokos (Mary, the mother of Jesus). The icon depicts the Theotokos full figured standing in aureole holding the infant Christ on her left arm and surrounded by Saints and crowds of suffering people. The theology in this icon depicts the Theotokos as our mother who feels our pain. It is believed, by Orthodox Christians, that she intercedes for us, bringing our pain into her Son's presence. She is praying our prayers with love, bringing our needs into the unique relationship that a mother shares with her children.
