AN 18TH C. FRENCH/SWISS MUSICAL PIPE ORGAN AND QUARTER STRIKING MANTEL CLOCK BY JAQUET DROZ, LA CHAUX DE FOND, CA. 1750.An extremely rare 18th century Swiss eight tune musical pipe organ and quarter striking wall clock. The movement signed with engraved inscription on the back plate: JACQUET DROZ A LA CHAUX DE FONDS, numbered 612.Origin: Switzerland, La Chaux de Fond, circa 1750.Dimensions: height- 112,5 cm, dial diameter – 29 cm.Description: two large winding squares for the spring powered moving and striking trains are set to the right of the dial. The large brass rectangular movement is spring driven with a silk suspension. Eight day duration, striking the quarters and the hours, outside count wheel for the strike. Numbered on the back plate 162. The whole movement is mounted on the left side (looking from back) of a wooden seat board, which is why the winding squares in the dial are situated to the same side. Below the massive brass spring barrel fusee movement which powers the musical pipe organ. The fusee has a very large single winding square attached to a gearing which rotates a movement. The rod turns a large brass wheel connected to the wooden pin barrel and thus lifts the valves at different intervals and releases the given amount of air from the bellows to the wooden flutes for each single sound. Some of family members worked in other cities, to mention Geneva, London, Paris, Naples, but only few were active in Chaux de Fond: Pierre (born 1721, died 1790), Jean (mentioned as artisan, not clockmaster, recorded in 1784), Henri-Louis (son of Pierre, born 1752, died 1791), Andre (mentioned in 1775 as clockmaster). According to the dates, we can attribute the clock only to Pierre Jaquet Droz (born 1721, died 1790).Condition report: clock case cleaned and restored in 2012. Same time movement was cleaned and overhauled. Traces of restorations of veneer. Crack on wooden top part. Steel reinforcements on back legs. Traces of restorations on musical movement. Pierre Jaquet-Droz (1721-1790) wurde als Sohn eines Bauern und Uhrmachers 1721 in La Chaux-de-Fonds in der Schweiz geboren und starb 1790 in Biel. Er besuchte die Primarschule in seiner Geburtsstadt, danach das humanistische Gymnasium mit anschließendem Studium der Philosophie in Basel. 1740 wandte sich Jaquet-Droz der Uhrmacherei zu, die ihr Zentrum in Le Locle und La Chaux-de-Fonds hatte. 1758 reiste er nach Spanien, um König Ferdinand VI. Pendeluhren zu verkaufen, von denen zwei mit einem automatischen Antrieb versehen waren. Ab 1759 baute er in La Chaux-de-Fonds eine international tätige Firma auf, die hochwertige Uhren produzierte. Sein Sohn, Henri-Louis (1752–1791) trat ebenfalls als Uhrmacher in den Betrieb des Vaters ein. Seine Firma hatte Zweigstellen in London, Paris und Basel. 1774 stellten die Jaquet-Droz drei Androiden dem Publikum vor, die ein Riesenerfolg wurden. Sie sind seine berühmtesten Werke und noch immer funktionstüchtig in Neuenburg zu besichtigen. Später begannen die Jaquet-Droz und ihr Geschäftspartner Jean-Frédéric Leschot Prothesen zu bauen, die anscheinend sogar funktionstüchtig waren. Pierre Jaquet-Droz war einer der bedeutendsten Schweizer Uhren- und Automatenbauer, der Stutzuhren und Prunk-Pendeluhren herstellte und spezialisiert war auf Automaten aller Art (u. a.
