A FRENCH ROYAL GENDARMERIE OFFICER’S SABER, MODEL 1817, COULAUX FRERES, BLUED AND GILT BLADE.
Sabre d'officier de la gendarmerie royale, modèle 1817
Origin: France, restoration period.
Blade: steel slightly bent single edged blade a la Montmorency, with one wide fuller and one narrow next to the edge. Signed on ricasso Coulaux Freres / Klingenthal. About 1/3 of the blade with blue ground, engraved gilt inscription: GENDARMERIE ROYALE in the cartouche finished with the crown both sides. Part of the gilt inscriptions both sides is later gold painted.
Closed brass half-basket hilt, four branches from yelman to the pommel, short backstrap, wooden grip covered with brown leather and twisted brass wire. Pommel with grenade on top.
Steel scabbard with a single carrying ring.
Dimensions: overall length in scabbard – 110 cm; overall length out of scabbard – 105,5 cm; blade length – 91,5 cm, width – 31 mm.
