A FRENCH M1822 HEAVY CAVALRY TROOPER’S SABER. FRANCE, KLINGENTHAL 1827.
Sabre de troupe de cavalerie lourde, modèle 1822.
After considering M1816 cavalry sword too fragile, French Minister of War – Duke of Bellune – approved new model: 1822. There were versions for troopers and officers, for light and heavy cavalry. There were small differences between models for cavalry formations – heavy cavalry had a less curved and longer blade and hilt with four branches, like the example offered.
Origin: France, 1827.
Blade: steel slightly bent single edged blade a la Montmorency, with one wide fuller and one narrow next to the edge. Engraved inscription on spine: [Manufacture Royale] Klingenthal Julliet 1827. Model 1822 for the light cavalry had significantly shorter blade – 92 cm.
Closed brass half-basket hilt, four branches from yelman to the pommel, short backstrap, wooden grip covered with brown leather and twisted brass wire.
Scabbard missing.
Total length – 113,5 cm; length of the blade – 97,5 cm; width – 30 mm; thickness – 10,5 mm.
