A BRITISH M1796 CAVALRY SWORD WITH ENGRAVED BLADE.
Origin: British Empire, late 18th / early 19th century.
Blade: wide, massive, curved single edged blade, with one wide fuller both sides. No visible maker’s marks. Decorated with engravings – on one side British Royal coat of arms above panoply, on other – GR monogram under the crown, with similar panoply below.
Closed brass hilt with a single knucklebow from yelman to the pommel, back arm of the yelman bent towards the blade, finished with a flat ball. Short, shield-shaped langets. Backstrap fixed to the grip with a single steel rivet. Wooden grip covered with the black leather, fixed with double twisted and single straight copper wire. Leather and wire probably of the later date.
Steel scabbard with double carrying ring.
Dimensions: total length in scabbard – 99,6 cm, without scabbard – 94,3 cm, blade’s length – 81,8 cm, width at the hilt – 36 mm, thickness – 8 mm.
