"Virgin with Child". Carved wooden sculpture with polychrome residue. Mechelen. Circa. 1515.
The characteristics such as a clear and slightly bulging forehead, almond-shaped eyes and small mouth are typical of Netherlandish sculpture, especially from Mechelen. This carving conforms to the dictates of dynamism in Gothic sculpture, having the famous “compensatory posture,” which consists of the forwards positioning of the leg opposite the curved hip. In this way the sculptor manages to create an extraordinary effect of movement in the clothing.
This sculpture should be included among the well-known "Poupées de Malines", or "Mechelse popjes", small statues of the Virgin Mary, saints or of the Christ Child which were produced in large quantities from the middle of the 15th century until 1515-30. There was demand for these statues due to their small format which was perfect for private or domestic worship. The quality of the carving, as well as the rich polychrome and the sweet and gentle expressions on the face popularised these small sculptures. It is known that they were included in the Flemish merchandise which was shipped to the Iberian Peninsula and also to more far-flung places such as the Canary Islands, America and the Philippines.
