Importante et exceptionnelle, montre bracelet chronographe en or jaune 18K, « oversized » de 36.5 mm de diamètre, avec l’entrecornes de 21.5 mm et cadran deux tons argenté « Big 55 » probablement unique. En superbe état de conservation, livrée avec son extrait des archives, inconnue du marché et conservée jusqu’à présent dans la famille du propriétaire original.

Patek Philippe, Ref. 530J, made in 1946
An extremely rare and important, highly attractive, fresh to the market, oversized 18K yellow gold vintage chronograph wristwatch with wide lugs and special two-tone silvered dial.
Never been presented to public before, the present 530J is a great discovery. The watch has never left before the original family. When knowing the importance of this reference and moreover the deep interest of collectors for large vintage Patek Philippe chronograph, this watch is a fantastic discovery for discerning collectors.
Ref. 530 was launched in 1937, just after the Ref. 130 series. It was the largest chronograph ever made in series by Patek Philippe and remains one of the rarest chronograph models manufactured by the firm. Production ceased around 1956. The cases were produced by case maker Georges Croisier, who was already in charge of the time-only Ref. 530 (without chronograph functions). The case diameter was usually 36 mm for the gold version and 36.5 for the steel version. According to researchers, only around 140 pieces were ever made.
The present 530J is not only one of the most exclusive and attractive Patek Philippe vintage chronographs; with its 21.5 mm between the lugs, it belongs to the very rare “wide lugs” series. Powered by the famous caliber 13’’’130, this model is the largest version of the well known Ref. 130 and was cased either in stainless steel, 18K pink gold or 18K yellow gold (like the present watch). This 21.5 mm Ref. 530 is reminiscent of the Calatrava, and has an overall more masculine look than the 19 mm examples, which are more tonneau-shaped. The case diameter has not suffered from polishing and measures a good 36.50 mm diameter.
Unknown till now, the present watch is joining the exclusive club of the ten known examples featuring a 21.5 mm version lugs, cased either in yellow gold or steel. Preserved in wonderful and overall condition, the present 530J example retains its original angles, proportions, lines and edges and per sure will delight any discerning collector. Showcasing wide, a deep hallmark in the band, as well as another hallmark under the lug at 7, strong 36.50 mm. diameter with thick lugs and back, this exceptional chronograph wristwatch has always been treated with great cares, particularly when one considers its production date.
The original two-tone Stern Frères dial is set with applied gold 12,6 numerals, applied gold Baton indexes, subsidiary dials for the 30-minute register at 3, and the constant second at 6, outer black enamelled minute/ second/ 1/5th second tracks, outermost tachymeter scale. It also displays a natural and attractive patina, with a nicely raised enamelled Patek Philippe & Co long signature, and the « Genève » with accent. The dial is engraved « 93 788 » on his back, which is the code for Patek Philippe order, at the Stern company. At the time of cataloging, it appears that the present dial offers a never-seen-before configuration on a Ref. 530 dial: the « Base 1000 » being positioned between « 70 » and « 60 » and combined with a « 55 » before the « 400 » of the tachymeter scale. We were not able to find another dial featuring the big 55 and the « base 1000 » in the same position. The two previous 530J known are: movement number 863878, with a pulsation dial, and movement number 863879, with tachymeter scale showing a « base » and « 1000 » on each side of the « 60 ». Slightly spotted around the registers, the dial shows a great patina and incredibly raised hard enamelled signature. According to scholars, less than 34 Ref. 530 in yellow gold appeared back on the market, excluding the present one.
The model has a three-body construction: a large, 18K yellow gold, tonneau-shaped case with downturned lugs and rectangular chronograph buttons in the band, a snap on gold concave bezel holding the glass, a snap on plain gold case back. Inside ticks the famous caliber 13’’’, Valjoux based, manual winding, 23 jewels, column-wheel chronograph, rhodium-plated, with straight line lever escapement, two-arm monometallic balance with timing screws, self-compensating blued steel Breguet balance spring, fine adjustment index regulator. The chronograph bridge is engraved with Patek Philippe & Co signature. The inside case back is engraved with the Key 5 for Georges Croisier, Geneva master case maker. Dial, case and movement are signed.
The present watch is furthermore accompanied by its Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming its production in 1946 and its subsequent sale on May 5th, 1947, with silvered dial and raised gold hour-markers.
Ref. 530 is described and illustrated in Patek Philippe Museum, Patek Philippe Watches, Volume II, page 265. The model is also illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 265.
