Beaded Double Head With Elephant And Leopard Mount - Tribal Art
This striking double head sculpture features two heads conjoined at the back, on top of the heads stand two exquisite figures representing an elephant and a leopard. One head displays a human face whereas the other has more skull-like features such as a broken nose and a large set of white teeth. Gorgeous long black beads cover most of the sculpture. The neck and the two handles are covered in a beautiful combination of red and cyan beads. The two animal figures are covered in the same beads which form an elegant checkered pattern on the legs and a zigzag pattern on their backs. The heads of both animal figures feature exquisite detail made from small red and white beads. A delicate brown necklace is fastened around one of the two handles.

Dimensions approx. 32 x 26 x 35 cm

Beaded art from the Cameroon Grasslands collected between 1985 and 2005. Rulers throughout the many Kingdoms in the Cameroon Grassland region (Bamileke –Bamum -Tikar) employed a range of Regalia to assert their political, economic and religious power. Presented publicly in lavish displays of wealth and power, many court objects were distinguished by their elaborate bead embroidery. Imported from Venice, Bohemia or Amsterdam, glass beads were considered a luxury material whose use and distribution were controlled by the King. The decoration of objects with vast quantities of brilliantly colored beads transformed utilitarian objects into symbols of royal status and prestige.

All lots are in the state the collector acquire them. No restorations or cleaning has been performed.
