A CELADON AND RUSSET JADE ‘MONKEY AND SACK’ SNUFF BOTTLE Nephrite of celadon color with shades of russet and a smooth, not too shiny finish. China, 1750-1850Well carved as a sack gathered at the neck by a ribbon, with a long peony branch carved in low relief suspended from the ribbon, the shoulder with a monkey clambering to the top of the sack.Shape: Pebble formHollowing: Very goodMouth, neck and lip: Small mouth with slanted lip at the top of the sackBase: Flat oval shape, succinct to shape of bottleStopper: Matching coral stopper, carved in the shape of a tendrilHeight of the bottle with stopper: 8 cmWidth of the mouth: 5 mmWidth of the neck: n/aCondition: One minuscule chip to head of monkey, otherwise perfectProvenance: Austrian private collectionLiterature comparison: The Joe Grimberg Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles.
