A JASPER SNUFF BOTTLE, QING DYNASTY Jasper (heliotrope), the untreated stone with an even and smooth surface polish. China, 18th-19th centuryThe opaque material showing a variety of green and red shades, which seem to co-exist in almost perfect harmony, clearly explaining why the vernacular term for this material has always been “bloodstone” - the "classic" bloodstone being green jasper (chalcedony) with red inclusions of hematite. It was also called "stone of Babylon" by Albertus Magnus (c. 1200 - 1280) and he referred to several magical properties, which were attributed to it from late Antiquity.Shape: Flattened almost round formHollowing: ExcellentMouth, neck and lip: Short cylindric neck with minimal flaring, flat top, narrow mouth, slanted outer lipBase: Flat ovalStopper: Jasper, possibly matching, of iron-red with green and white streaksHeight of the bottle with stopper: 6 cmWidth of the mouth: 6 mmWidth of the neck: 18 mmCondition: Excellent, with almost invisible fritting to outer lip, owed to the texture of the stoneProvenance: British private collectionLiterature comparison: SNUFF BOTTLES FROM THE MARY AND GEORGE BLOCH COLLECTION: PART X.
