atmospheric night landscape with pedestrians in the bright moonlight on the piazzetta, with two columns dedicated to the city saints Markus and Theodorus, the left one with the lion of St. Mark and Todaro on a crocodile on the right column, posing in front of the Biblioteca Marciana and the imposingly illuminated Doge's Palace on the left, occasional torches light up the scenery, which extends to the Bacino di San Marco with sailing ships and gondolas and enables the view of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore directly next to the island of Giudecca with the imposing tower and the dome of the Benedictine abbey of the same name, Friedrich Nerly The Elder (1807 Erfurt to 1878 Venice) created numerous views of the lagoon city and also selected the presented motif several times with almost identical lighting and accessories, finely glazed vedute painting with a few impasto details, oil on canvas, around 1860, unsigned, on the back of the old stretcher original ink annotations indicating the stretcher's size, professionally closed flaw in the canvas, retouching, relined, framed in the original gold stucco frame, rebate dimensions approx. 76 x 110.5 cm.
