'Capt. J.C. Gerbig' Painted Tin Document Box, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, c. 1890. The tall rectangular box with deep lid, retaining latch and lead padlock, painted with inscription 'CAPT, J.C. GERBIG. / N.G.P. / CHAMBERSBURG, PA' in gold on dark red japanned ground, 22cm wide, 10cm deep, 43cm high (9 3/4in wide, 4in deep, 17 3/4in high). Footnotes: Provenance Note German-American John C. Gerbig (1841-1927) ran a family soap manufacturing company in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, while also serving on the Pennsylvania National Guard as second lieutenant and later elected captain of the Eighth Regiment, Company C, which he commanded during the Homestead steel strike of 1892.
