LUIS GORDILLO (Seville, 1934).
Untitled, 1981.
Mixed media on panel.
Signed and dated on the back.
Measurements: 156.5 x 236.5 cm, 160 x 240 cm. (frame).
This important diptych by Gordillo forms part of the artist's production as a result of his research into the exploration of limits and the idea of accumulation. As the painter himself explains, "Sometimes I paint a picture and once it is finished I feel the need to overflow it into a painting next to it". In this case, each of the parts that make up the work are conceived as an indivisible whole in which he evokes the dichotomy between chaos and order. While the left-hand side, composed of different vignettes, conveys a sense of repetition and rhythmic fragmentation, the right-hand side plays with organic forms and curved lines that confer a greater sense of dynamism and expressiveness. Likewise, Gordillo astutely employs the different chromatic tonalities, managing to give the whole a certain unity and balance.
Luis Gordillo is one of the leading figures of abstract art in Spain. After studying law and music, he entered the School of Fine Arts in Seville. Between 1958 and 1960 he lived in Paris, where he became acquainted with an artistic and cultural environment full of freedom which influenced him profoundly. He was deeply influenced by it. His first works move within the registers of Informalism, following the guidelines of Michaux, Tapies, Millares, Wols, etc. Later he would evolve towards the Pop aesthetic, of which he was one of the pioneers in Spain. Later Gordillo would add to his particular style technological research, the transformation of images in the media and photographic creation. Throughout his career Gordillo has had a very marked dilemma between a very direct and expressive work and, on the other hand, the creation of a very controlled, clean and perfectionist work in which mechanical techniques such as offset, photography and more recently the computer have influenced him since the 70s. The linear element, the mixture of techniques and the inclusion of symbolic graphic elements, such as letters, are of considerable importance and are close to informalism. Of great international prestige, he has been awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas (1981), the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (1996), the Medalla de Oro del Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (2004) and the Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas (2007). In 2008 he was also awarded the Order of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres de France by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. He has had solo exhibitions all over the world, and is represented at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, MACBA in Barcelona, the Juan March Foundation, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the Folkwag Museum in Germany, etc.
