LUIGI VERONESI (Milan, 1908-1998).
"Hand", 1937.
Photograph.
Signed and dated.
With stamp of the Galleria Sagittario Roma.
Measurements: 23 x 17,5 cm.
Photographer, painter, set designer and film director, Luigi Veronesi discovered his passion for photography during his youth. In his snapshots he sought to "record transparency, thickness, shadows, lights and reflections in a wide range of fascinating variations and opportunities for expression", capturing common objects filtered through an abstract optic, full of innovative ideas and transgressive concepts. His work is defined as a synthesis of avant-garde currents from various parts of Europe.
Luigi Veronesi began his artistic activity during the 1920s, studying textile design and practising photography. He was introduced by Raffaelle Giolli to a group of Italian intellectuals associated with the magazine Poligono. In 1932 he travelled to Paris and met Fernand Léger. His first works were presented at the Milione gallery in Milan. In 1934 he joined the Abstraction-Création group in Paris, experimented with Constructivism and adhered to the German Bauhaus method. He took part in the first group exhibition of abstract art, together with the artists Oreste Bogliardi, Cristoforo De Amicis, Ezio D'Errico, Lucio Fontana, Virginio Ghiringhelli, Osvaldo Licini, Fausto Melotti, Mauro Reggiani and Atanasio Soldati, who signed the "Manifesto of the First Group Exhibition of Italian Abstract Art". He took part in the Milan Triennial (Trienale di Milano) in 1936. In the same year he took part in an exhibition of abstract art in the city of Como (Italy) with the artists Lucio Fontana, Virginio Ghiringhelli, Osvaldo Licini, Alberto Magnelli, Fausto Melotti, Enrico Prampolini, Mario Radice, Mauro Reggiani, Manlio Rho and Atanasio Soldati. Veronesi also worked in the world of theatre and cinema, making experimental films. After the Second World War he co-founded the photographic group "La Bussola". From 1963 to 1979 he taught graphic art at the Higher Course of Industrial Design in Venice and then taught chromatology at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera (Milan). His work is exhibited at the Civico Museo d'Arte Contemporanea (CIMAC) in Milan.
